Windsurfer Shaw leads at new event at Riva del Garda

British windsurfer Bryony Shaw leads the way after the first three races of the first event of the new EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup Series at Riva del Garda in Italy.

Unlike fellow Brit Nick Dempsey, who is also racing in Italy but hasn’t competed since winning an historic world gold in March, Shaw has took to the water twice since claiming global silver herself.

Both appearances came on the ISAF Sailing World Cup circuit with Shaw second in Palma and victorious in Hyeres for the overall title and the world No.1 spot in the women’s RS:X.

And the Olympic bronze medallist’s fine start to the year, she was also fourth at the Miami World Cup in January, continued on the first day at Riva del Garda in Italy.

The 30-year-old recorded two wins with a second sandwiched in between for the lead while Dempsey is currently third in the men’s RS:X fleet after a fourth, a win and a third.

Dempsey became the first man ever to win two RS:X world titles back in March but skipped the World Cups in Palma and Hyeres, focussing instead on fitness training.

His finishes put him third overall with fellow Brit Elliot Carney second and Tom Squires fourth with Olympic champion Dorian van Rijsselberghe leading the way.
