Wind set fair for Scott as he remains on course for Olympic gold

Giles Scott remains on course for the Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 after a strong recovery from a poor start saw him retain the top spot in the men’s Finn class.

The 29 year old from Huntingdon had a disappointing first race of the day when an uncharacteristic error saw him finish down the field in 11th position.

However Scott demonstrated exactly why he is the man to beat in the day’s second race as he finished first to retain the gold medal position.

“On that course today there was a huge gain on the right-hand side of the course all day,” said Scott.

“I was pretty slow to realise that on the first leg and let the fleet get to the right of me.

“It just put me on the back foot but I managed to come back to 11th which I suppose was damage limitation. Then to come out and win the next race was all I could ask for really.”

Elsewhere there was a good performance from Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark in the 470 Women as a 1st placed finish in the day’s first race and a 6th in the second left them 3rd overall.

In the RS: X Men, Nick Dempsey finished 5th and 8th to retain silver medal position in the overall standings but he admitted he was disappointed with his performance.

“I was winning every race but I didn’t win every race,” he said.

“I made mistakes which is a bit annoying.

“I was sailing brilliantly, really, really well and I had opportunities to close it out and I didn’t.

“I only made small mistakes but on a day like today you get punished hard.”

Another good performance came from Luke Patience and Chris Grub in the 470 Men as finishes of 5th and 6th left them well poised at 6th in the overall standings.

“Today was a good day actually,” said Patience. “We just looked to continue with a nice methodical approach which is indicative of day one and day two of a regatta.

“Don’t lose it on day one you know. You can’t win it but just don’t lose it.”
