Watson's bows out in Eastbourne semi-final

Great Britain's Heather Watson saw her impressive run at Eastbourne end at the semi-final stage after she was beaten in straight sets by American teenager Madison Keys.

The 22-year-old was playing in her first WTA tour singles semi-final since winning the Japan Open back in October 2012 but was undone by the power of the world number 47.

Keys, 19, needed just over an hour to triumph 6-3 6-1 and reach her first ever tour final at the expense of Watson, who had become the first British women to reach the last four in Eastbourne since 1982.

Despite the result it has still been an encouraging week of tennis for British number one Watson as she claimed her first ever victory over a player ranked in the world’s top 20 by beating Flavia Pennetta in round two.

Watson will next be in action on the grass at Wimbledon where she faces an opening round match against Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic.
