Ward and Cox advance but Evans out of French Open qualifying

James Ward and Dan Cox lived to fight another day in French Open qualifying, however fellow Brit Dan Evans failed to advance beyond the first round.

Ward, the hero of Great Britain’s Davis Cup victory over USA earlier this season, broke Moldova’s Radu Albot twice to take the first set 6-3 before coming through in a see-saw second 7-5.

The 27-year-old needs to win three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw and faces American Ryan Harrison next up.

Also making it through to the second round of qualifying was Cox who lost just three games as he saw off the challenge of Amir Weintraub 6-2 6-1 in just 53 minutes.

Cox will face either top seed Paolo Lorenzi or Mohamed Safwat in his next match.

Evans, however, suffered a disappointing first-round defeat to the lower-ranked Gastao Elias.

The Portuguese raced to a 6-3 6-1 victory to end the hopes of Evans, who made the third round as a qualifier at last year's US Open.
