Upcoming IOC Session Will Shape Olympic Movement

One of the most important meetings of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will take place in early September in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as the IOC Membership gathers to make three historic decisions:

On 7th September, the IOC members will select the Host City for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The three candidate cities are Istanbul, Turkey; Madrid, Spain; and Tokyo, Japan.

On 8th September, the IOC will confirm the ‘core sports’ programme for the 2020 Olympic Games, and also select one of the following sports to be added to the Games programme: baseball/softball, squash or wrestling.

On 10th September, the IOC will select its next President.  Candidates for the IOC’s highest elected office are (alphabetically) Thomas Bach (Germany), Sergey Bubka (Ukraine), Richard Carrion (Puerto Rico), Ng Ser Miang (Singapore), Denis Oswald (Switzerland) and CK Wu (Taiwan).  The incoming President will replace Jacques Rogge, who has served as President of the IOC since 2001.
