Ujah takes first Diamond League victory in Rome

Rio 2016 Olympian CJ Ujah clinched the first Diamond League victory of his career with a season's best 100m performance in Rome.

The 23-year-old clocked a time of 10.03 seconds to beat Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut and the USA's Ronnie Baker to the line, in what was the third fastest time of his athletics career.

It comes just two weeks after the sprinter finished third in Eugene, and with the IAAF World Championships getting underway in the capital in just under two months time, Ujah is confident he can put on a show once more.

"It was a good race," he said. "I knew I had to focus on my race and my focus was to be free and to run free and that is what I did.

"Baker was the favourite in the race but I knew it was going to be a close race.

"London [2017] is the main aim for me; I hope I can do something special then."

Elsewhere in Rome, Andrew Pozzi made a promising start in the men's 110m hurdles, but just missed out on the medals to finish fourth.

His time of 13.24 seconds was just 0.05 seconds short of his personal best, and just a tenth behind winner Aries Merritt of the USA.

Olympic bronze medallist Desiree Henry finished sixth in the women's 100m, while Steph Twell placed 16th in a race that was recorded as one of the fastest women's 5,000m of all-time.

Away from the track, Morgan Lake equalled her season's best of 1.91m to finish just off the high jump podium in fourth, as Holly Bradshaw took seventh in the pole vault after a first time clearance at 4.40m.
