Trott and Nelson medal at Hong Kong World Cup

Laura Trott says everything is geared towards more Olympic Games success after she helped Great Britain get off to a strong start at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Hong Kong.

Two-time Olympic champion Trott claimed silver in the scratch race while there was also a medal for Emily Nelson who took bronze in the points race.

Those performances were the crowning achievements of a solid days work for Britain’s cyclists with the men’s and women’s team sprinters earning the chance to go for gold on Saturday.

For Trott it was victory over China’s Quianyu Yang in the sprint that earned her the silver medal, with gold going to Marina Shmayaknova of Belarus.

"I'm just using this weekend to get some experience again I guess," Trott told British Cycling. "For me the World Championships and the Olympics are obviously the most important thing so to try and get as much race experience is what I'm here for.”

Trott’s medal came after she, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Elinor Barker and Ciara Horne had qualified fastest in the women’s team pursuit.

"The pursuit this morning went really well, I think we're really pleased with that,” Trott continued. “It felt really smooth. We were a little bit off schedule but it came together and it was a really good ride. So that went to plan."

Nelson’s success came after she found her rhythm in the later stages of the points race with gold going to Jolien d’Hoore of Belgium and Canada’s Jasmin Glaesser winning silver.

"I didn't go into it thinking I would get anything so I'm very happy," said Nelson.

"It was quite a hard race actually - quite a lot of people went for all the sprints at the start so I just played it a bit clever, sat in there and then got the points in the last four sprints when everyone was absolutely dead."

In the team sprint Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny and Matt Crampton secured a gold-medal ride against Poland while Jess Varnish and Katy Marchant will square off with Russia’s Daria Shmeleva and Anastasia Voinova.  The Team GB Club has now officially launched!
