Three the magic number for Tom Daley after Kazan diving hat-trick

It was a bronze bonanza for Tom Daley at the weekend’s FINA World Diving Series as he celebrated not one, not two, but three medals on the board in Kazan.

That began with a third-place finish in the Men’s 10m synchro alongside Dan Goodfellow, matching the pair's achievement of winning bronze together at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Opening their contest with a 51.00-point dive, the duo went from strength to strength in Russia as each of their last four dives scored greater than 70, with a three-and-a-half reverse somersault with tuck scoring 80.58 on its own.

That was enough for them to comfortably take third place with a total of 406.38, just two points adrift of Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein in the runners-up spot, while China’s Yang Hao and Chen Aisen led the way on 462.57.

And from there Daley continued to be on top form as the final day saw him add two more bits of metallic luggage to his flight home.

The 22-year-old finished third in the individual 10m platform event with a total of 543.80 points, before joining Grace Reid for bronze yet again, this time in the mixed 3m synchro event.

Daley began in imperious fashion in Russia, opening his day with a dive worth 98.60 points that comfortably took him into an early lead.

He was to continue his consistency through the rest of the competition, taking third place after his second dive – a position he was to maintain right through until standing on the podium to match his accolade of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

His score was only bettered by Chen Aisen of China with 580.60 and his compatriot Yang Hao, who was six points adrift having held top spot until the final dive.

But there was still more to come as Daley joined forces with Reid, taking third by a point in dramatic circumstances from Rommel Pacheco and Dolores Hernandez in the Mixed 3m synchro.

That was despite the British pair sitting at the bottom of the field after the first dive, only scoring 45.60 to sit five points off the lead.

But from that point on the scores only went one way, level third after their third attempt and holding on to a deserved bronze medal with a score of 299.82, the latter’s first medal of the 2017 FINA World Diving Series.

Li Zheng and Wang Han took gold as China celebrated more success, while Jennifer Abel and Francois Imbeau-Dulac of Canada took second, 20 points ahead of Daley and Reid.
