Team GB modern pentathlon quartet set for British Champs

Pentathlon GB performance director Jan Bartu admits the 2013 British Championships arrive at the perfect time of year with all four of Britain’s representatives from London 2012 set to compete in Solihull.

Samantha Murray, who won Britain’s 65th and final medal of the London 2012 Olympics, joins fellow Team GB members Mhairi Spence, Nick Woodbridge and Sam Weale on the start list this weekend.

Murray and reigning individual world champion Spence also see Olympic silver medallist from Beijing 2008 and defending champion Heather Fell in the women’s field in Solihull on Saturday.

Woodbridge and Weale, who represented Team GB at Beijing 2008 as well as London 2012, will be joined by Jamie Cooke, California World Cup bronze medallist Joe Evans, Sam Curry and Tom Toolis in the men’s competition.

The winner of the men’s and women’s overall titles will earn selection for July’s European Championships in Poland with Bartu looking forward to the event which falls nicely in between World Cup rounds two and three.

“The dates for this year’s championships have fitted in well with the international calendar,” said Bartu.

“It’s an opportunity for our athletes to compete in the UK, and particularly for the younger ones. Competing is the best training for them.”
