Team GB at Baku 2015:Day one preview

Day one of the European Games is here and, after the excitement of the Opening Ceremony last night, the action begins as the first medal of the Games is up for grabs in the women’s triathlon.

Heather Sellers is Team GB’s only competitor as athletes bid to make history in order to become the first ever European Games Champion when the action begins at 8.30am BST.

Although Sellers admits she’s quite new to the sport, the Leeds based triathlete has made huge strides in the last four years, culminating in her selection as part of Team GB for the European Games.

“Most people in the sport have been doing it since they were very young so I really never thought I would be part of a Team GB squad and definitely didn’t think I would get the chance to go somewhere like Baku,” said the 24-year-old.

“People always ask me how long I’ve been running for and they can’t believe it when I tell them it’s only been four years.

“But I would like to think that I have got a good chance of running myself into a medal at Baku and that would be amazing.”

Elsewhere, the action continues in the Baku Aquatics Centre with both Team GB water polo and synchronised swimming squads back in the pool.

Water polo coach Nick Buller and his squad face a tough group game against one of Europe’s leading water polo nations in Hungary, who dominated Germany in their opening fixture, eventually running out 21-4 winners.

First up for Team GB’s synchronised swimmers is the solo preliminaries before the free combination event starts at 2pm this afternoon.
