Olympic champions Heather Stanning and Helen Glover showed no sign of rustiness on their international return together, finishing eight seconds clear of their rivals to progress through to the semi-finals of the latest World Rowing Cup in Aiguebelette.

The duo won Britain’s first gold medal of the London 2012 Olympics in the women’s pairs but took a temporary break when Stanning served a spell in the army.

The 29-year-old returned to the sport in November but missed the 2014 European Championships with fatigue with her partner instead taking gold alongside Polly Swann.

But reunited once again in France on Friday, the pair topped the time sheets in their heats, finishing in 7:02.69, with USA4 their nearest challengers.

They were one of nine British boats to make it through to the semi-finals on Friday with racing continuing over the weekend.
