Skip Murdoch enjoys opening win at Winter Olympics

Skip David Murdoch admitted he got just what the doctor ordered after Britain’s men’s curling rink won their opening match of the Winter Olympics.

Murdoch’s rink was always in control against host nation Russia first up in Sochi and a score of four in the sixth end gave them a commanding 6-2 lead.

The Russians pulled two back in the ninth to make it 7-4 but shook hands in the final end as Murdoch expressed his pleasure at winning first time out.

“It is nice to get that first one out of the way because you just never know what it is going to be like,” said Murdoch, who faces world champions Sweden during the evening session next.

“You get a feel for it in practice but it was a whole lot quicker out there then it has been. We knew that might be the case and also you have to get used to the stadium.

“There is plenty of curl. The ice is absolutely great, the guys have done a first-class job and getting the speed up on the ice to what we were hoping for is close to perfect.”
