Six-time AYOF medallist Wilson wins British junior crown

Nile Wilson recovered from an early fall to win the men’s junior all-around title at the British Gymnastics Championships before insisting that not dwelling on his mistake was key to doing so.

Wilson, who won six medals at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival earlier this year including three golds, fell on his first piece of apparatus, the parallel bars, in Liverpool.

However Wilson moved on confidently with an outstanding high bar routine and continued to excel thereafter, particularly on the floor where he scored 14.850, with his winning total 84.650.

Dominick Cunningham, a winner of seven medals at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival back in January, took silver 83.150 while Jay Thompson claimed bronze with 80.900.

And Wilson, who claimed all-around silver at the European Junior Championships last year, admitted his confidence couldn’t be higher currently.

“It’s going really well for me at the moment, I made a few mistakes but also had some outstanding routines that made up for it,” said Wilson.

“I had great support from my friends and family in the arena, everyone shouting for me which really makes a difference.”
