Will Sharman had to settle for Commonwealth Games silver in the 110m hurdles on Tuesday night as England returned five silver medals at Hampden Park.
The 29-year-old clocked 13.36 seconds but was beaten by Jamaica’s Andrew Riley meaning he has now come second at the last two Games after finishing with silver in Delhi four years ago.
Also on the track, Laura Weightman produced an excellent run to take her place on the podium in the 1500m, finishing second behind Faith Kibiegon of Kenya.
Ashley Bryant took silver, his debut international medal, in the men’s decathlon after two superb days of competition and Nick Miller was runner-up in the men’s hammer.
And Laura Samuel produced the jump of her life to take silver in the women’s triple jump – the 23-year-old smashing her personal best with a jump of 14.09m.
"It was good to get a medal. It was a very tough field and it could have gone any way in the medal hunt," said Sharman.
"It was a close race. I made a big mistake by hitting (the hurdle) with my trail leg and that cost me, but that's no disrespect to the winner. He ran a great race and there we are."
Weightman, who is trained by Steve Cram, held her own down the home straight to hold off a surge from Canada’s Kate van Buskirk and finish in a time of 4:24 minutes.
And afterward she admitted there is no better feeling than achieving something you have craved for so long.
“Words can’t describe the feeling when you’ve crossed the line and you’ve got the medal you so desperately wanted,” she said.
“Coming off that top bend I was just hanging in for dear life.
“It was absolutely incredible out there. I saw so many friends and family on my lap of honour that I didn’t even know were going to be here. It was great to see so many familiar faces.”
