Andrew Selby won his first fight at the European Championships however the same fate didn’t befell fellow London 2012 Olympian Josh Taylor, who was beaten in his opening bout.
Selby, unbeaten for the British Lionhearts during their debut World Series of Boxing season and the defending European flyweight champion, made light work of seeing off Aleksandar Aleksandrov 3-0.
The 24-year-old gave a typically virtuoso performance against his Bulgarian opponent dominating from the first bell to the last and winning every round on the judges’ card in Minsk.
He now faces Germany’s Ronny Beblik, who beat British teammate Charlie Edwards, in the quarter-finals however light welterweight Taylor won’t box again after losing 2-1 to Armen Zakaryan.
Sam Maxwell is also fighting in the light welterweight category and, having overcome Mihai Nyeki first time out, he saw off Italy’s No.1 seed Vincenzo Mangiacapre 2-1 to set up a clash with Zakaryan.
And Joe Joyce will also be in quarter-final action in the super heavyweight category after beating Milutin Stankovic of Serbia 2-1 with Mikheil Bakhtidze of Georgia up next.
