Rio 2016 Medal Moment: Lutalo Muhammad -80kg taekwondo silver

Four years ago Lutalo Muhammad left London 2012 with a bronze medal in the -80kg taekwondo in his back pocket.

The 21-year-old was brought into the team as a late addition and made the most of the opportunity, working his way through the field to finish with a medal.

But, coming into Rio, there was only one thing on Muhammad’s mind – getting that gold.

Muhammad duly worked his way through to the final, guaranteeing himself at least a silver medal, but was denied gold by a last-second kick to the head from Ivorian opponent Cheick Sallah Cisse.

The victor immediately ran off on laps of the arena as Muhammad, who gave an emotional post-event interview, had no time to respond.

Here we take a look at the agonising way in which Muhammad missed out on that gold, but hear how proud he is to have still brought a silver back for Team GB.

At the time I was devastated with only a silver medal.

I was so close to being Olympic champion. However, I can look back on it now and I am proud to be an Olympic silver medallist, but you better believe I’m getting the gold next time.

One of my own sporting highlights of the Games was definitely making the final, it was a dream of mine for so long.

I came so close to winning the gold medal but that’s given me the confidence I can get the gold at Tokyo 2020.

One of my favourite memories of Rio, outside of my competition, was also meeting Usain Bolt. Seeing all the girls around him in the Olympic village; he’s a greedy guy!

Since 2012, taekwondo in Britain has seen growth year after year. Before 2012 I had people asking me what the heck taekwondo was. I don’t have to say it’s like karate anymore. Taekwondo is a unique sport and people are getting behind it.
