Q&A with Team GB windsurfer Bryony Shaw

Bryony Shaw won Olympic windsurfing bronze in 2008 – 16 years after getting the bug for the sport on a family holiday. The Londoner is also a European champion.

What number is most important to you?

“The number 22 – because to be this many points ahead going into a medal race ensures the Gold in Sailing. My goal for this year is Olympic gold - so that’s the number that matters most to me.”

When did you first think you could become a professional sailor?

“I was 13 years old. I’ve always loved the sport. The best thing about it is the fact that because we are on the ocean, every day is different.”

What do you do to prepare for a race?

“I always arrive at the race site 2 hours before the start of race. I rig my sail as soon as I get there, no matter what the wind, and I always prepare electrolytes in my water before going out.”

What item of kit do you use the most?

“I replace the battens in my sail almost once a week – I probably go through 50 Battens every year.”

What is the most impressive place sailing has taken you to?

“I’ve competed in 26 countries but my favourite place is actually one where I have sailed but haven’t competed - the Dominican Republic. It’s a water sport enthusiast's playground.”

How much training do you do?

“I train for 20 hours a week and usually only have one day off. I’ve trained on 10 Christmas days too. But physiotherapy is also really important and I also fit in 5 sessions of that every week.”

What is your best gym achievement?

“I can do a 100kg squat.” Every moment matters on the Road to Rio. Find out more about our athletes’ journeys by clicking here.
