Pennie pays the penalty in European Slalom Championships

Great Britain’s Fiona Pennie was left to rue two time penalties as she lost her K1 women’s title on the final day of the European Senior Canoe Slalom Championships in Vienna.

The 31-year-old had posted the fastest time but two one-second penalties saw her finish fifth with a time of 97.52 seconds – 1.41secs behind Germany’s Ricarda Funk who claimed gold.

Funk’s compatriot Melanie Pfeifer took silver and France’s Emilie Fer bronze.

GB’s Beth Latham finished seventh after also receiving two penalties.

In the men’s C2 final, Olympic silver medallists David Florence and Richard Hounslow finished seventh for GB in a time of 95.61secs having received four time penalties.

They finished 4.41secs behind the Slovakian pair of Ladislav Skantar and Peter Skantar who claimed gold ahead of Poland’s Piotr Szczepanski and Marcin Pochwala and Slovenia’s Luka Bozic and Saso Taljat who won silver and bronze respectively.
