Ouseph breezes through

English number one Rajiv Ouseph cruised into the second round at the European Championships in Sweden with a convincing win over Spain's Ernesto Velazquez.

The sixth-seeded world number 20, a bronze medalist two years ago, eased through 21-10 21-13 in 28 minutes to set up a clash with Ukraine's Dmytro Zavadsky.

England team-mate Carl Baxter also went through in the men's singles, beating Italy's Giovanni Greco 21-17 21-6, while youngster Toby Penty saw off Josip Uglesic of Croatia 21-13 21-17.

In the women's singles, five-time English National champion Elizabeth Cann came from behind to beat Sweden's Jenny Wan 16-21 21-13 21-17.

Her rival for a Great Britain Olympic spot, Scotland's Susan Egelstaff, lost ground in the battle for ranking points, surprisingly losing 23-21 21-14 to Czech player Kristina Gavnholt.

Scotland's current national champion Kirsty Gilmour enjoyed better fortune, seeing off Hungarian Orsolya Varga 21-17 21-11.

Scottish men's singles players Kieran Merrilees and Alistair Casey both went out, losing to Petr Koukal of the Czech Republic and Germany's Dieter Domke respectively.
