Olympic24: Valegro to retire; Murray wins in London

Charlotte Dujardin announces Valegro will retire after Rio 2016 while Andy Murray sees off David Ferrer at the World Tour Finals in London. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours.

Two-time Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin says Rio 2016 will be the final competition for her horse Valegro.

The pair won team and individual dressage titles at London 2012 and also picked up two World Championship gold medals and a silver at the 2014 World Equestrian Games.

As well as world and Olympic titles Dujardin and Valegro have seven European medals to their name – five of which are gold.

But their run together will come to an end in Brazil with Durjardin excited about one final ride.

"This will be Valegro's retirement after Rio so I want to go out there and want to enjoy every last minute," she told the BBC.

"He's got to stay fit and healthy and get ready for the flight. It's a 16-hour flight and he needs to acclimatise.

"I'm really, really excited heading towards Rio. We get to go out in February and have a look around and fingers crossed it all goes well.”

It might be one down for Andy Murray at the ATP World Tour Final but he is taking nothing for granted in London.

An opening clash with David Ferrer proved relatively routine for the Olympic champion as he came through in straight sets 6-4 6-4.

But, while he might have taken an early lead in his group, he knows a match with Rafa Nadal will be a stern test.

“It was a tough match with a lot of long rallies and he fought right the way through to the end as always,” said Murray.

“You have to try and win every match, every game counts, a few years ago I got knocked out in the group stages by one game or something.

“So you need to try and win the matches in two sets if you get the opportunity which was good for me today.

“Just because I have won my first match there are no guarantees and I need to win the next one which will be tough against Rafa.”

Adam Peaty says he will be keeping up the hard work as he prepares for his first Olympic Games.

The 20-year-old has had a whirlwind year with three World Championships gold medals to his name along with a host of world records in the process.

With 50m and 100m gold in Kazan he became the first swimmer in history to win both events at the same World Championships.

Those achievements were recognised on Sunday when he was named Swimming Performance Athlete of the Year at the ASA Aquatics Awards.

"The past two years have been incredible and I am so grateful to be working with such a talented support team," he told British Swimming.

"Everyone works unbelievably hard and I am so proud of everything we've achieved together as a team so far.

"I'm really looking forward to next year and I will continue to work hard to ensure I'm in the best shape possible to compete in front of my home crowd in London at the European Championships and then at my first Olympic Games."

Two-time Tour de France king Chris Froome will start his 2016 season at the Herald Sun Tour in Australia from February 3-7.

The 30-year-old will be preparing for a huge year that will see him go for a third Tour title as well as gold in the Olympic road race and time trial.

It will be the first time that Team Sky has competed at the event and Froome says he is looking forward to some nice weather to kick off his campaign.

"I'm really pleased to start my 2016 season at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. Victoria is a beautiful part of the world and racing in the warm climate will give me a good platform for the new season."
