Olympic24: Trott delivers World Cup omnium gold in Cali

From a historic World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow to track cycling's World Cup, it's been a successful weekend for Great Britain. Here's our review of the last 24 hours:

Double Olympic champion Laura Trott continued her winning ways with an impressive victory in the omnium at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Cali.

Trott, who won three European titles in October, dominated her rivals and hammered home her advantage in the concluding points race, finishing 53 points ahead of second placed Laurie Berthon over the six events.

“We went into it thinking it was just a stand-alone points race. It’s not very often you go into a world cup with that sort of lead,” Trott told British Cycling. "We didn’t want to take anything for granted, I’m here to learn."

Jon Dibben was fifth in the men’s omnium. The 21-year-old was seventh and 12th respectively in the time trial and flying lap and an impressive points race put him within touching distance of the top three.

Great Britain's cycling team finish the first of three World Cups with three medals - a gold, silver and bronze. The remaining two rounds take place in New Zealand and Hong Kong.

The face of British gymnastics has been changed forever according to Nile Wilson, after an historic week at the World Championships in Glasgow that saw the country claim five medals.

Windsurfer Bryony Shaw believes she is perfectly set up for a banner year after claiming victory in the Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi.

Shaw retained her 2014 title after dominating her fleet – winning seven of the series races, including Sunday’s final medal race, to take gold by nine points from Italy’s Flavia Tartaglini.

That triumph rounds off a successful spell in the Middle East for the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist after she secured silver at the World Championships last week.

London 2012 silver medallists Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark were also triumphant in Abu Dhabi as they claimed their maiden World Cup Final gold in the women’s 470 event, beating world champions Lara Vadlai and Jolanta Ogar in the process.

Natalie Powell gained further points towards Rio 2016 qualification as the judoka finished seventh at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.

Powell picked up 80 points after beating Anastasiya Dmitrieva of Russia in her opening contest before losing to Brazil's Mayra Aguiar in the quarter-finals and Lkhamdegd Purevjargal of Mongolia in the repechage.

Chris and Gabby Adcock narrowly missed out on claiming a maiden Bitburger Open mixed doubles title as they lost in the final.

The Adcocks had beaten Dutch pair Jacco Arend and Selena Piek in just 29 minutes in the semi-final but unseeded duo Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba were too strong in the showpiece – triumphing 21-18, 21-17 in 34 minutes.

The Brits had led 15-13 at one point in the first set but their Polish opponents, who were European mixed doubles champions back in 2012, recovered and never looked back.

And Gabby admits her and Chris will now have to dust themselves off as they move forward with their season.

“Disappointing end to the tournament,” she tweeted after the final defeat. “Another tournament, another learning curve, time to rest up and get ready for China/Hong Kong.”
