Olympic24: Robson confident of being fit for Wimbledon

Former British No. 1 Laura Robson has moved to ease fears over her fitness for this year’s Wimbledon while a number of Brits continue their preparations for SW19.

Laura Robson is confident of being fit for Wimbledon despite picking up yet another injury problem.

The former British No.1 and Olympic mixed doubles silver medallist was forced to retire from Eastbourne on Sunday with a thigh injury.

But she took to social media on Monday to reassure fans over taking up her wildcard entry for Wimbledon.

“Getting solid treatment on my leg and will be all good for Wimbledon,” she tweeted.

Robson is currently ranked 308 in the world with a wrist problem hampering her chances in 2014 and 2015, and leaving her to rely on a wildcard entry for Wimbledon, which gets underway on June 27.

It was a mixed day for British tennis as Kyle Edmund reached the second round of the Nottingham Open but there were defeats for Heather Watson and Tara Moore in Eastbourne.

British No. 3 Edmund, who lost to Andy Murray at Queen’s Club last week, beat Czech Lukas Rosol 6-4 6-3.

Elsewhere on the men’s side, British world number 554Dan Cox beat 16th seed Thiemo de Bakker in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying in Roehampton.

Watson and Moore were unable to taste victory at Eastbourne, suffering first round defeats to Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova respectively while Naomi Broady was defeated by Monica Puig.

Britain’s No.1 Johanna Konta is one of the 16 seeds and so has a bye into the second round.

Ian Stannard and Luke Rowe look set to be part of the Team Sky squad at the upcoming Tour de France and Stannard claims they are ready to protect Chris Froome as he seeks to retain his title.

Stannard and Rowe helped Froome defend his Criterium du Dauphine crown earlier this month and were also part of the team 12 months ago when the then-30-year-old climbed the top step of the podium at Le Tour for the second time.

The Kenyan-born Brit is now trying to become just the eighth cyclist in history to win the prestigious 21-stage race on three occasions.

“We're going there again to try and win the Tour with Chris," Stannard told CyclingNews. "My role there will be to look after him on the flat stages and if that means us taking control on some stages, we'll do that.

“I'll look after Froome as long as I can with Luke [Rowe] on the flat and then once the gruppetto is formed I'll try and stay well-hidden.”

Like all brothers, Alistair and Jonny Brownlee are competitive about most things – and that includes their abilities in the kitchen.

The Brownlees often work side by side when out on the course but when it comes to cooking, they are constant competitors.
