Olympic24: Murray relishing title defence as Froome looks ahead

Andy Murray is full of confidence as he kicks off his Madrid Open defence while Chris Froome is staying positive following the Tour de Romandie. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours:

Reigning Madrid Open champion Andy Murray insists he will start his title defence with new-found confidence on the clay.

His win last year gave him his first ever Masters title on the surface, and as he comes into this year's tournament on the back of reaching the semi-final at the Monte Carlo Masters, Murray couldn't be in a better position as he aims for a second successive victory.

And for the current world number two, his boosted spirits can only serve to help his title campaign.

"It really helps my confidence coming back here as champion," he said.

"It was a very important week for me here last year against some of the top players in the world and that gives me a lot more confidence and belief on this surface which I didn't really have before.

"I was always going into the clay season a little bit unsure as to how I would do but winning here last year has really helped that.

"I hope that I can have another good performance again this year."

Murray beat Rafael Nadal to clinch the title in the Spanish capital last year, but with recent wins in Barcelona and Monte Carlo under his belt, Nadal has demonstrated he is well and truly back to his best.

But despite failing to reach the final in Monaco, Murray remains hopeful he can make it two from two in Madrid under the pressure of Nadal's viable challenge.

"I think my performance in Monte Carlo was good and I played some really good stuff," said Murray.

"I didn't start the tournament so well but I finished it playing much better than I had over the previous few weeks. I'd like to think I can have a strong clay season this year.

"Rafa Nadal is great on this surface. Last year, he didn't play so well but he is the best clay court player of all time.

"He is gaining confidence from winning tournaments and some tough matches as well and there is no reason why he wouldn't be one of the favourites here, and it's good for tennis."

Chris Froome has played down any worries about how he will fare at this year's Tour de France, despite struggling in the general classification at the Tour de Romandie.

Racing for Team Sky, Froome slipped out of contention after suffering a puncture on the opening stage, and instead had to settle for stage hunting.

He did win the queen stage on Saturday, racing to a solo victory after a long breakaway, and that helped him to be named most combative rider in the race.

However it was to be the only stage win for Froome in the six-day race, an event he previously triumphed at in 2013 and 2014, as he finished in an overall 38th place, 21 minutes behind champion Nairo Quintana.

And although he is set to face Quintana in the Tour de France come July, Froome insists he remains confident as he pushes for his third yellow jersey.

"It has been a tough week for us as a team," he told Cycling Weekly. "A couple of guys came straight out of the Classics and are still quite tired from those.

"We've also been a bit unlucky because we had a few illnesses in the team this week.

"Our team has struggled but I'm not at all worried about the Tour de France."

Andrew Butchart, Laura Whittle and Eilish McColgan all dipped under the Olympic qualifying standard for the 5000m in an invitational event at Stanford in the USA.

The trio all recorded lifetime bests at the Payton Jordan invitational with Butchart just missing out on the Scottish record as he finished in a time of 13:18.96, six seconds under the qualifying standard.

That was good for second place in the men’s event, while in the women’s event Whittle came fourth in 15:08.58, with McColgan just behind her in 15:09.94, both well inside the qualifying standard of 15:24.00.

Elsewhere at the event Guy Learmonth came third in the 800m in a time of 1:47.08.
