Olympic24: Murray marches on in Madrid, Muhammad set for return

Andy Murray continued the defence of his Madrid Open title as he reached the quarter-finals with victory over Gilles Simon while Olympic bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad is named in the taekwondo European Championships squad. Catch up on all the news from the last 24 hours here.

It may have looked straight forward enough but defending champion Andy Murray admitted he had to be patient in his approach as he saw off Gilles Simon to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.

Murray needed just an hour and 38 minutes to beat 16th seed Simon 6-4 6-2 in Spain on Thursday.

Murray's serve was never broken and he broke Simon for the first time to take the opening set before breaking his opponent a further three times in the second set to complete the win.

"It's always difficult to get the balance right against him because the better you hit the ball, the faster it comes back against him," said Murray, who will play Czech Tomas Berdych later today.

"He uses the pace very well so I knew I needed to be patient and use variety, but also when the chance is there, go for it.

"Sometimes he makes players rush, but I didn't have that problem. It was good from start to finish."

Olympic bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad is determined to mark his return to action with a medal at this month's European Championships in Switzerland.

Muhammad has not fought since winning the World Grand Prix final series in Mexico last December.

However he has been named as part of GB Taekwondo's 15-strong squad for the European Championships from May 19-22.

"This will be my third European Championships and I am extremely eager to go on and win it," said Muhammad.

"I won the title in 2012 and got bronze in 2014 when I lost to the winner.

"I am really keen to get back in the ring. I have had an intense rehabilitation period but I am back into my normal training programme now. So, I am excited to show everyone what I can do.”

There’s less than 100 days to go until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Team GB’s ranks boosted to more than 60 with the selection of the fencing team.

Fencers James Davis, Richard Kruse and Laurence Halsted will turn out for Team GB in the men’s individual and team foil events – with Marcus Mepstead a reserve in the team event.

Davis, Kruse and Halstead have Olympic pedigree after they represented Team GB at London 2012 – where they finished sixth while, more recently, Kruse won gold with Team GB in the team foil event at the European Games in Baku.

Kruse said: "It's the pinnacle of the sport so to be selected and to be able to go out there for my fourth Games is going to be brilliant." Read more here.

Great Britain’s rowers are gearing up to make their mark at this weekend’s European Championships in Brandenburg, Germany.

The competition will mark the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic racing season with the 47-strong team looking to send out an early warning to their rivals.

The blue riband men’s four event will see Alex Gregory return to the boat in which he won Olympic gold at London 2012 while he is joined by Moe Sbihi, George Nash and Constantine Louloudis.

“Finally we are in the racing season and I’m really looking forward to getting out there in Germany and testing what we can do,” said Gregory.

“It’s an early indicator of potentially what could happen later on in the year at the Olympics and I’m itching to get going.”

Quillan Isidore believes he can use the wide track at Papendal to his advantage when he races at round three of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup this weekend.

The 19-year-old, one of four British Cycling Team riders in action in Arnhem, Netherlands, believes the length and width of the track will play to his strengths as he looks to impress on the international circuit.

He returns to the venue where he made his first World Cup appearance outside of the UK in 2015, and after exiting in last year's qualifiers, Isidore is confident he can make amends this time around.

"Last year I was a bit intimidated from it because it was my first supercross track outdoors," the 2012 under-16 world champion told British Cycling.

"It was quite windy at the time so I was a bit nervous. But this year I am really looking forward to it and it is all about the start really. When I open up that's when I'm best.”

Great Britain recorded a fifth place finish in the team relay at the European Mountain Bike Championships in Huskvarna, Sweden on Thursday.
