Olympic24: Murray begins coach search; European Aquatics Champs roll on

Andy Murray is kickstarting his search for a new coach after parting company with Amelie Mauresmo while Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson narrowly miss out on a diving medal at the European Aquatics Championships. Here's our review of the past 24 hours in Olympic sport.

Andy Murray may have ended his partnership with Amelie Mauresmo but the world No.3 claims his new coach could well be another former top player.

Murray recently parted company with ex-world No.1 Mauresmo, citing a lack of time spent working alongside each other as his main concern – the pair had spent just one week together since the Australian Open in January.

Before his link up with the French star, the British No.1's coach was eight-time Grand Slam winner Ivan Lendl, who guided him to US Open, Wimbledon and Olympic glory.

And having reaped the benefits of having a big name in his corner, the 28-year-old is not ruling out going down that route again.

"It doesn't have to be, but it's definitely possible it could be an ex-player," said Murray. “They can help around the Slams, in the big moments, the big matches. They've been there and done it and they understand that."

Divers Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson vowed to learn the lessons of their performance at the European Aquatics Championship in London.

Couch and Toulson were leading the standings heading into the final dive of the women’s 10m synchro competition at the Olympic pool.

But the British pair - ranked number one in Europe and number three in the world - made an error when it mattered and dropped to fifth place as Germany’s Maria Kurjo and My Phan took gold.

“We’re a little bit gutted tonight but she’s [Toulson] such an amazing diver and we’ve got so much more to give,” Couch told British Swimming.

“We’re going to let that one go and just prepare for the summer ahead.”

Elsewhere, rising stars Freddie Woodward, 19, and Jordan Houlden, 17, both produced their best international scores after making the men’s 1m springboard final.

Woodward placed seventh with 378.20 points while Houlden, the youngest diver in the final, was ninth with 368.55 points. Ukrainian diver Illya Kasha took gold ahead of Italy’s Giovanni Tocci and Austria’s Constanstin Blaha.

Woodward said: “There’s lots of positives to take from that final, I felt strong and I’m looking forward to my next and main event the 3m on Thursday.”

European silver medallist Matthew Hudson-Smith will face a world class 400m field on his home track at the Birmingham Diamond League.

The 21-year-old will line up against Olympic champion Kirani James and London 2012 800m silver medallist Nijel Amos on June 5.

And with Asian record holder Yousef Masrahi and Isaac Makwala also featuring, Hudson-Smith hopes the event will be the perfect launch pad for his Olympic year after injury destroyed his 2015 season.

“I can’t wait to compete at the Birmingham Diamond League,” he said. “It’s always special for me to be able to compete on the track where I train nearly every day.

“It will be great to test myself against a great field, particularly Kirani James who I have really looked up to for the last few years.

“Getting injured last summer was a big disappointment for me, but I’m now feeling good and looking forward to competing at such a big event and getting ready for such an important season.”

Johanna Konta is already relishing the prospect of a clash with home favourite Roberta Vinci at the Italian Open after cruising into the second round.

The British No.1, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals this year, served eight aces as she beat Sweden’s Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-2 in round one.

She will now face 2015 US Open finalist Vinci in the second round and Konta is under no illusions about the challenge the Italian poses.

"She's a great player, incredibly talented and creative," said Konta. "I hope to bring a good level to the court and the fans will be able to enjoy it.

"Whoever the fans will be cheering for - and it will most likely be her - it'll be just great to attract a lot of people and the energy they bring. It's definitely a pleasure to play in front of big crowds."

England will welcome back Alex Davis for the penultimate round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Paris this weekend.

Warwick Lahmert will captain the side, which also includes Alex Gray and Ethan Waddleton who return to the squad after being unavailable for the previous two legs.

England will face South Africa, Australia and Brazil at the Stade Jean Bouin in the French capital, before playing the final round on home soil at Twickenham on May 21-22.

"It is great to be able to name Alex Davis in what is an exciting but relatively inexperienced squad," said head coach Simon Amor.

"He was on top form at the start of the season and it was a big loss when he and Dan Bibby picked up injuries in Sydney four months ago.

"He has been looking good in training and, while we will need to manage his game time in Paris, this is the start of his return to full fitness."
