Olympic24: Guy wins World Cup gold, Gregory satisfied after trials

James Guy wins 400m freestyle gold as Great Britain bag three medals on the opening day of the swimming world cup in Doha, while Alex Gregory reflects on a job well done at the GB rowing team trials. Here's our review of the last 24 hours.

James Guy lead the way on the opening day of the swimming World Cup in Doha with gold in the 400m freestyle.

Guy, winner of 200m gold and 400m silver at this year’s World Championships, put in an impressive performance to finish two seconds ahead of his rivals.

He was joined on the medal rostrum by Scotland’s Stephen Milne who took bronze.

While Jazz Carlin rounded off a hat-trick of medals for Britain with silver in the 800m freestyle.

World champions Alex Gregory and Mohamed Sbihi laid down a marker of intent in the countdown to Rio after taking victory at the Great Britain rowing trials in Boston.

In foggy conditions in Lincolnshire, the Leander-Molesey club combination finished six seconds ahead of their rivals over the 5km time trial on Sunday in 17:08.92 minutes.

Leander duo Pete Reed and Constantine Louloudis were second, with George Nash and Will Satch third.

All six of the men were a part of Great Britain's 2015 World Championship winning men's eight crew earlier this summer.

"As Boston 5ks go that was a good one," said Gregory. "We got out hard at the start and attacked it and when we settled into our rhythm we held it better than previously.

"I have been racing 5ks here since the juniors in 2003 and there have only been two or three that I would say that I got right. This was up there.

"As you are racing, because it's against the clock, you don't know how well you are going. You have to base it all on experience and the perception you have of your fitness levels."

There were home wins for Surrey Smashers and Loughborough Sport as the National Badminton League got underway on Monday evening.

Chloe Birch won the decisive event for Loughborough Sport as they triumphed over Chris Adcocks’ University of Nottingham Badminton team 3-2.

While last season’s table toppers Surrey Smashers – missing Gabby Adcock through injury –  beat MK Badminton 4-1, with captain Chris Langridge and Tom Wolfenden kicking things off with victory in the men’s doubles.

“MK Badminton have improved dramatically this year and we’ve had one or two injuries so to get the win, we are really pleased,” said Langridge, whose side topped last season’s league table before losing out in June’s play-offs.

“We’ve got a good squad at the moment and we’re looking forward to trying to make the play-offs and fingers crossed take things further.”

By her own admission, discus-thrower Jade Lally was unaccustomed to the attention surrounding her when she won Commonwealth Games bronze in Glasgow last year.

And while injuries may have prevented her from pushing on again this summer, the 28-year-old is adamant she now has both the tools and the know-how to deal with the pressures of trying to star on the biggest stage of all at Rio 2016.

"For me to get to Rio, it would mean so much. But I don't want to think about it too much and put it on a pedestal," said Lally, who found her progress disrupted in the 2015 season by combination of a kidney stone problem and a neck issue.

"It's about little checkpoints, we're in the qualification period now and it will run until July.

"I was really happy with how things went at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and was hoping to kick on but it was not possible.

"Going forward, the main difference is we are going to monitor a lot of things, get more science on board and how I can get stronger and peak for the right time. It's about putting the building blocks in place, starting with having a good winter's training."

British number two Aljaz Bedene will face American John Isner at the Paris Masters after coming through his first round test.

Bedene, who has already won two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw, beat Spain’s Marcell Granollers 7-5, 7-6 on Bercy’s indoor courts.

British number one Andy Murray had a bye and will play Fernando Verdasco or Borna Coric in round two on Wednesday.
