Olympic24: GB Sevens enjoy unbeaten group stage and Cavendish on form in France

Both GB Sevens teams top their group after each went unbeaten on the opening day of the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Sevens in Poland while Mark Cavendish sprinted to his fourth win of this year's Tour de France. Here's our round-up of the last 24 hours:

Neither GB Sevens team could be beaten on the opening day of their last competition before Rio 2016 as both the Royals and Lions squads progressed through the group stages of the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series in Gdynia, Poland.

It means both teams topped their respective groups with the Royals taking on Italy in their quarter-final while the Lions will play Georgia, both later today.

Mark Cavendish believes he played the waiting game to perfection after sprinting to his fourth stage win of this year’s Tour de France and 30th in total.

The Manx Missile maintained his impressive form in this year’s Tour by edging out Alexander Kristoff and Peter Sagan on the stage 14 route from Montelimar to Villars-les-Dombes Parc des Oiseaux.

In a hectic finish, Cavendish came around the wheel of Marcel Kittel in the final straight to take the win – although the German felt his rival had unfairly cut across him in the final metres and made his feelings clear.

Great Britain are just one win away from reaching the semi-finals of the Davis Cup after Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot put them 2-1 up against Serbia.

The doubles pairing – who will both head to Rio next month after Inglot was added to Team GB’s tennis squad on Friday –  beat Filip Krajinovic and Nenad Zimonjic 6-1 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 6-4.

That gave visiting Great Britain the advantage again after Serbia had earlier draw level in Friday’s postponed second singles rubber with Dusan Lajovic beating James Ward 6-1 6-3 6-2.

Great Britain men's head coach Bobby Crutchley believes his side are starting to get sharper in front of goal after seeing off the Netherlands 3-0 at the Ergo Masters Four Nations Invitational in Dusseldorf.

Sam Ward opening the scoring on 11 minutes and Great Britain extend their advantage on 43 minutes when Ashley Jackson, making his 100th Great Britain appearance, fed the ball wide to Dan Shingles who then hit the ball towards goal and Ward ghosted in for his second.

Henry Weir added the gloss five minutes later, leaving Crutchley upbeat ahead of their next match against Belgium on Sunday morning.

"I thought we defended well but in the second half we added a bit more attacking threat. When they went to a kicking back we were well organised and a great piece of skill from Ashley Jackson set us up to score a third and make it safe,” he said.

"We've been very good defensively for a while now so I am pleased that has continued out here. We want to create chances and to punish teams when we do. Scoring three goals today was nice and it was nice to keep a clean sheet as well."

Jodie Stimpson narrowly missed out on the podium with a fourth placed finish at the Triathlon World Series event in Hamburg yesterday but did move up to second in the ITU rankings.

Fellow Brit Helen Jenkins finished the sprint distance triathlon in 14th place in her final competitive race before flying to Rio for the Olympic Games while Lucy Hall was 20th.

In the men’s event, Adam Bowden was the highest British finisher in 21st place with Tom Bishop recording a 49th place finish as Spain’s Mario Mola claimed victory.

Great Britain’s Kimberley Woods took the silver medal in yesterday’s C1W final before helping Great Britain win gold in the C1W team event at the under 23 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Krakow, Poland.

In her individual boat, the 20-year-old Woods finished just behind Jess Fox, the current senior World Champion from Australia, but said afterwards her silver medal was at the top of her list of achievements so far this year.

“Today’s silver is right up there with my other medals,” she said.  “A World Championships means a lot more than a World Cup medal.

“I was third at Ivrea in World Cup 1 then fourth and fifth in the next two World Cups. So to go back up onto the podium today feels really good and I’m hoping I can make another step up for the Europeans next month as well.”

Great Britain once again showed their depth in the competition when Woods, Eilidh Gibson and Jasmine Royle finished up with gold in the team event.

In the under 23 C1M final, Great Britain’s Will Smith missed out on a podium place finishing fifth in his first under 23 World Championship. Sportsbeat 2016
