Olympic24: Farah likely to miss World Indoors, Adcocks march on

Mo Farah likely to miss next year’s World Indoor Championships as he concentrates on the defence of his two Olympic titles, while Chris and Gabby Adcock book World Superseries Finals spot with opening round win at China Open. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours.

Mo Farah admits next year’s outing in Scotland for the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix is likely to be his only indoor competition as he looks to focus on the defence of his Olympic titles.

Farah has already been confirmed to race in the 3,000m north of the border on February 20.

Although that looks likely to be his only indoor race of the campaign, ruling him out of an appearance at the World Indoor Championships which take place in Portland, Oregon – where Farah trains – in March.

"The 3,000m in Glasgow is likely to be my only indoor race of 2016 and I want to make it a good one," said Farah, who will be looking to defend his two Olympic titles in Rio later in the summer.

"It will give a good indication of how my training is going and will hopefully set me up for a successful outdoor season."

Chris and Gabby Adcock will be appearing at next month’s BWK World Superseries Finals in Dubai after guaranteeing a top-eight finish this year.

England’s number one mixed doubles pairing qualified for the end-of-yaer, $1 million showpiece thanks to a three-game win over Korea’s unseeded pair Shin Baek Cheol and Chae Yoo Jung in the opening round of the China Open.

Chris Froome has the tools to go down as one of the Tour de France’s greatest ever riders, according to teammate Geraint Thomas.

The Team Sky man secured his second Tour crown earlier in the year after first taking victory back in 2013 – Thomas instrumental in his most recent triumph.

It’s set to be a huge 2016 for Froome with the Brit already targeting another Tour title as well as gold in the Olympic road race and also the time trial – an event he finished third in at London 2012.

“Froomey can’t do anything more to prove himself. He’s not in the UK too often I guess and people don’t really get to see the real Froomey,” said Thomas.

“It’s hard to say how many Tour de France titles he can win. It could be anything, from two to five to six.” Read more here.

Shooter Jen McIntosh admits she will be a woman on a mission when she makes her second Olympics appearance in Rio next year.

The 24-year-old is quick to admit that London 2012 brings back some mixed emotions. Pride in being part of the celebration but disappointment with her own personal performance, a 36th and 42nd place in the 10m and 50m rifle respectively.

"I expect a lot of myself, I'm a very demanding person," she said.

"In many ways London was a huge disappointment, my results were really bad and I didn't perform when I needed to.

"I started thinking about 2016 almost as soon as my competition finished in London. I knew I was better than that. I think I'll define my career by what I do at an Olympics and I can't wait for Rio now." Read more here.

Judoka Owen Livesey will aim to go one better this week and climb the top spot of the medal rostrum at the Oceania Open.

Livesey claimed a silver medal in the -81kg category at last weekend's Africa Open, adding valuable Rio Olympic qualification points in the process.

More medals could be on the cards for Britain this week with 15 judokas named for the competition in Australia from November 13-14.

"It was the first of three competitions on this tour, so to start it with a medal was good and obviously more points towards Rio qualification,” said Livesey.

“On to Australia [for the Oceania Open] now where I can hopefully go one better.”

Olympians Olivia Federici and Katie Clark have returned to the Great Britain senior set-up after impressing at trials.

The duo, who both represented Great Britain at London 2012, form part of the 14-strong squad who will now begin training as the senior national team.

They return alongside Genevieve Randall and Jodie Cowie as they train as duets ahead of the Olympic Test Event at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre from March 3-7.

A total of 24 duets will qualify to compete at the Olympic Games and in order to secure the place for Great Britain, the duet will need to finish in the top 11 overall.
