Olympic24: European gold for sailing duo Groves and Saxton

The Nacra 17 makes its debut at the Olympic sailing regatta next year and selection for the crew is still to be decided, so Nicola Groves and Ben Saxton will be delighted with their European gold. Here's our review of the last 24 hours:

Nicola Groves and Ben Saxton claimed their first major victory together with a gold in the Nacra 17 European Championships in Barcelona.

The mixed crew multihull will make its debut at the 2016 Olympics and Groves and Saxton - who won a silver at ISAF World Cup in Miami - are delighted with their progress after joining forces just over a year ago.

“We’ve been working hard over the summer and in the build up to this event with our coach Maurice Paardenkooper, and it’s great to see that it’s starting to pay off," said Saxton.

"We had good speed in our new boat and showed level heads in the medal race so we’re happy with the progress we’ve made together.”

Groves added: "We’re really chuffed with the way we closed out the race when it mattered, and we’ve had a great week."

Peter Mills insists the upcoming National Badminton League season is the perfect preparation for Rio after a disappointing excursion to the World Championships in Indonesia.

Mills and partner Andy Ellis endured a rough ride in Asia last month after they went down in the first round against Polish duo Adam Cwalina and Przemyslaw.

Illness struck Mills and a large portion of the English team in Jakarta but the 27-year-old says he is getting back to full fitness.

“We’ve just had the World Championships in Indonesia,” he said. “Unfortunately we didn’t win our first round match in that one.

“We had a tough game against a top Polish pair and unfortunately we got ill as well in Indonesia.

“We would have like a better start to the Olympic qualifying but we had a couple of tough draws at the start and then we just didn’t really get the wins that we wanted.

“We had a couple of close games that we ended up losing and you think if we’d won those games we probably would have been the favourites to win the next game.

“We’ve still got a long way to go, I think we have ten or 11 tournaments even before Christmas now so there is plenty of time to get some more points.”

Lee Merrien believes he's in the shape to run the qualifying time for next year's Olympic marathon.

Merrien ran his first 26 mile race since London 2012 when he finished 26th in the Berlin Marathon, clocking two hours, 15 minutes and 30 seconds.

He has just clock a time under 2:14 to be considered for next year's Games.

"I think I'm in shape to run faster than 2:15:30 gave me credit for," Merrien told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"But having had the last six months of reasonable training, having had two years on and off of very interrupted training, I can now start my next six months when I'll tackle another marathon with a much better starting point so I can build on that fitness."
