Olympic24: Drinkhall triumphs in Rio, Murray looks ahead to Davis Cup

Paul Drinkhall is victorious at the table tennis Rio Test event, while Jamie Murray turns his attention towards next week's Davis Cup final after World Tour Finals exit. Here's our review of the last 24 hours.

Table tennis player Paul Drinkhall laid down a marker ahead of next year by winning the Aquece Rio International Tournament.

The competition doubled up as the test event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

He made light work of Mario Costa and Humberto Manhani in the third round and quarter-final respectively before then beating Cazuo Matsumoto 4-3 to progress through to the final.

And the singles player kept up that form to beat Thiago Monteiro in the final to take the title.

“Happy with my performance and to get the win out here at the Rio 2016 test event,” he tweeted afterwards.

Jamie Murray quickly turned his attentions towards next week’s Davis Cup final after his run at the ATP World Tour Finals came to an end.

Murray and doubles partner John Peers were knocked out after going down 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 16-14 to the Bryan brothers in a dramatic climax.

At one point it looked like the pair were going to pull off an unlikely victory as they brought up five match points – four from 9-5 up in the decider.

But they couldn’t capitalise on any as the Americans continually fought back and eventually came through – with Murray eager to put the defeat behind him when Great Britain bid for a first Davis Cup title since 1936,

"I'm very motivated, it's an unbelievable opportunity for us," added Murray.

"It hasn't happened so often for Britain and we want to get out there and give it our best shot, and try and lift the trophy."

The 28-year old already has a spot at Rio 2016 confirmed but is looking to head to Brazil on the back of a stellar worlds.

In 2014 she finished ninth at the ISAF World Championships and will face some stern competition in the Middle East with Marit Bouwmeester looking to defend her world crown.

"It's not been a great year so far but I'm aiming to medal at the Worlds," she said.

"We've been focussing on a couple of areas since the test event, which at the moment are a bit of a work in progress, so the Worlds will be a reality check to see if we're back on track.

"The Worlds are always important because you know everyone will be there trying to perform to their best.”

The likes of Tom Daley and Jack Laugher will take to the boards in Sheffield next summer in order to secure their place on the team for Rio 2016.

The 2016 British Diving Championships will take place at Pongs Forge International Sports Centre from June 10-12 and will double up as the Olympic trials.

The British Diving Team secured five Olympic quota places at the World Championships in July 2015 and will be aiming to secure more berths at the World Cup in February.

“Sheffield is a great pool that has showcased some of the best competitions we have hosted and I look forward to bringing the very best level of competition back to Yorkshire,” national performance director Alexei Evangulov told British Swimming.

“This is an important competition for athletes on the road to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and I know this will bring out the very best performances from our athletes. The competition will be exciting with a high standard and I know we will have a strong team once this meet is finished.”
