The pair qualified for the final in third place and were looking in a strong position through the final moved out of the medal places in the final round.

However, Mears and Laugher already qualified the 3m synchro Olympic quota place by winning bronze at the World Championships in 2015.

Ben Swift moved into the overall lead of the Ruta del Sol in Spain after finishing second to Italy’s Oscar Gatto on stage three.

The Team Sky rider started the day fourth overall and crossed the line more than a bike length behind Gatto in a sprint finish, but thanks to combined stage placings, he now climbs to the top of the general classification.

There are no bonus seconds on offer at the five-day race, so Swift is level on time in the standings with second-placed Raymond Kreder and third-placed Reto Hollenstein.

Geraint Thomas stayed second at the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal after finishing third on stage three's individual time trial, as Tony Martin took the overall race lead.

Fabian Cancellara claimed victory on the day by stopping the clock on a flat, 18km course starting and ending in Sagres in 20min 57sec, which was five seconds faster than runner-up Martin and 28 seconds ahead of Thomas.

The result moved Martin to the top of the general classification, three seconds ahead of Thomas and 20 seconds in front of third-placed Ion Izagirre.

Ashleigh Pittaway and Madi Rowlands lit up Team GB’s Youth Olympic Games after winning gold and bronze during Day 8 of Lillehammer 2016.

Pittaway began the medal action in the women’s skeleton this morning, finishing almost a whole second clear of the field after her two runs, before Rowlands secured bronze in the ski slopestyle to take Team GB’s medal tally at the Games to three.

Rowlands’ medal follows up her success in the halfpipe event earlier in the Games when her gold medal was the first ever won by a Team GB athlete on snow in the history of the Olympic and Youth Olympic Games.
