Olympic24: Carlin takes gold; Britain held by China

Jazz Carlin takes a second gold medal at the European Short Course Championships and Great Britain are held by China in the Hockey World League Final. Here's our review of the last 24 hours.

Great Britain finished the European Short Course Championships off in style as Jazz Carlin added 400m freestyle gold to her 800m title.

That meant Britain finished the meet with 11 medals with Carlin taking two gold to add to seven silvers and two bronzes.

Carlin had won 800m gold on Thursday and added the 400m crown to her collection as she clocked 58.81 to see off Hungary's Katinka Hosszu by 0.03 seconds.

Elsewhere there was also a silver medal for Chris Walker-Hebborn who was joint second in the 50m backstroke.

Skipper Kate Richardson-Walsh admits there was more than a hint of frustration as Great Britain were held to a 1-1 draw with China in their second Hockey World League Final match.

The Brits lost their first match to hosts Argentina in Rosario but took the lead in the third quarter against China thanks to Helen Richardson-Walsh.

But it was a short-lived affair as Mengyu Wang evened the scores moments later.

"We dominated the game and we had more chances we just couldn't get the ball over the line and it does get frustrating," said Kate Richardson-Walsh.

Next up for Britain is a clash with Australia in Pool B on Tuesday as they look to pick up their first win of the competition.

Gemma Gibbons finished her 2015 on a high with a bronze medal at the Tokyo Grand Slam in Japan.

She finished third in the -78kg category, battling through with two tough comeback victories along the way.

A tricky opening victory over Hyunji Yoon set up a tie with 2015 Baku and Paris Grand Slam medallist Akari Ogata in round two.

Seemingly out of it heading into the final seconds, Gibbons produced a waza-ari before securing the ippon, to reach the quarter-final.

Defeat to Olympic champion Kayla Harrison in the last eight forced Gibbons into the repechage but she cruised past former world champion Mayra Aguiar to reach the bronze medal match.

There she took on Ruika Sato and after trailing early, Gibbons fought back to win and claim the bronze.

“I am really pleased with today’s result. I have always dreamt of getting a Tokyo Grand Slam medal and today I achieved that,” she said.

“It’s great to have medalled at all three tournaments on the Asia tour, a nice end to the year.”

Lauren Smith and Heather Olver clinched the USA International title on the weekend and celebrated their first women's doubles crown for seven months.

The national champions saw off Thai top-seeds Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanchai after losing the opening game 18-21.

They bounced back in style to win the next two 21-19, claiming seven-successive points in the decider to help clinch victory.

In the men's doubles Peter Briggs and Tom Wolfenden were unable to make it beyond the second round as they lost out to Chinese Taipei's Lin Chia Yu and Hsiao-Lin Wu. Sportsbeat 2015
