Chris Froome remains in the driving seat for 2015 Tour de France win while Mo Farah just one of a number of British stars to shine on opening night of Anniversary Games. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours.
Chris Froome’s bid for a second Tour de France title remains on track despite Nairo Quintana’s late attack on stage 19.
Froome’s lead was cup by 32 seconds after the Colombian finished second behind defending champion Vincenzo Nibali rode clear to win the stage.
But Froome remained in touch and holds a two minute 38 second advantage going into Saturday’s final competitive stage for the general classification.
"It was a massive day. From the word go the racing was on,” said Froome.
"All in all it was a good day to be able to tick it off with one day of racing left. Quintana put in a big attack and I opted to limit my losses and keep a bit of energy.”
Mo Farah and Laura Weightman were the stand out British performers on the opening night of the 2015 Anniversary Games.
On a wet night at the Olympic stadium, Weightman clocked 4:06.09 in the 1500m to win her first Diamond League title.
While Mo Farah returned to winning ways with a convincing performances in the 3,000m.
There were also encouraging performances from Zharnel Hughes in the 200m, CJ Ujah in the 100m and Jessica Ennis-Hill in the 100m hurdles. Read more here.
Great Britain’s Liam Phillips had to settle for fifth in the elite men’s time trial superfinal at the UCI BMX World Championships on Friday.
The 26-year-old set a time of 31.496 seconds on his lap in Zolder, Belgium but France’s Joris Daudet took the rainbow jersey after a time of 30.953 seconds.
“It felt great going out for the superfinal but it’s always difficult when you are on the limit because sometimes you make mistakes,” said Phillips, who will race again on Saturday.
“I’m really happy where I am at physically, my starts have been really good these last two days in practice and in time trial today so I’m in a good place and ready to race.”
James Denny admitted it had been good to get started after marking his World Aquatics Championships debut with a 26th-place finish in the 1m springboard event.
Denny, who will dive with Matty Lee later in the Championships, scored 309.60 from his six dives.
“This is my first ever World Championships so it was a bit nerve-wracking going into the event,” said Denny.
“But it’s a nice little event just to get the cobwebs off ready to go for synchro later in the competition.
“I think the key for us in that is to just be steady. Of course we’re aiming to do some great dives but we’re also aiming not to drop any dives so if we do six dives on our head, we’ll be happy wherever we end up."
James Cooke admits he is ready to make up for the disappointment of the Worlds by starring in front of the home crowd at the European modern pentathlon Championships in Bath.
Great Britain failed to medal at the recent World Championships but will be hoping to bounce back on the road to Rio with performances on home soil next month.
“We had a disappointing Worlds, it’s definitely something we want to improve on as a team,” said Cooke, who is selected as part of a four-strong male team including double Olympian Nick Woodridge, Joseph Chong and Tom Toolis. “We’re not just going to the Europeans to make up the numbers, we want to be there competing at the top end.” Read more here. Olympic gold medallist and world number one Scott Brash will attempt to defend his Grand Prix title on board Hello Sanctos in Syon Park on Saturday.
Brash leads a strong British contingent in the London leg of this season’s Global Champions Tour.
British riders have traditionally dominated the home leg in recent years with Ben Maher winning in 2013 and Brash taking the honours 12 months ago.
"It is a great feeling to ride in front of your home crowd; the British fans are so supportive and I'm always grateful to see how strong the showjumping community is," said Brash.
Ashbourne tennis starlet Victoria Allen admits she has to pinch herself in amazement at the thought of representing Team GB.
Allen is one of a 44-strong team who will take part in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi, which gets underway on Sunday.
“I have played for Great Britain a couple of times before in European Winter Cups in Sweden in February and they were really good experiences," said Allen.
“But playing in a European Youth Olympic Festival will be even better and I can’t wait to get out there now.” Read more here.
