Olympic24: Adcocks into Dubai final, GB women see off South Korea

Chris and Gabby Adcock become first Brits ever to reach Dubai World Superseries Final, and GB women's hockey finish seventh at the Hockey World League Final. Here's our review of the last 24 hours.

Chris Adcock is relishing Sunday’s final match in the season-ending World Superseries Finals in Dubai, after he and wife Gabby became the first British duo to ever reach this stage of the competition.

The Adcocks beat Indonesia's Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto 21-17 22-20 in 34 minutes to secure their spot in Sunday's mixed doubles showpiece at the Hamdan Sports Complex.

They will meet Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na in the final as they look for their first career win over the South Korean duo.

“It’s great to be the first Brits ever to reach the end-of-year final,” said Chris. “It wasn't something we were aware of but of course it’s nice to achieve that.

“The Koreans are definitely an in form pair right now, and have won a couple Superseries events recently.

“However we are also feeling in good form and shape going into the final. And the challenge of Ko and Kim really excites us.”

Great Britain ensured they finished their Argentine expedition in winning fashion as they saw off South Korea 5-1 to seal seventh place at the Hockey World League Final in Rosario.

Nicola White and Ellie Watton got Britain off to a flying start in the first half, before Kerry’s side ran away with it in the third and fourth quarters with goals for Hannah McLeod, White, and Helen Richardson-Walsh, before Han Hye Lyoung grabbed a late consolation from a penalty corner.

And, despite not making progress deep into the competition, head coach Danny Kerry believes his side will take plenty away from their time in South America.

"The tournament as a whole has been a good experience,” said Kerry. “The critical game was the China game where we created lots of chances but the ball wouldn't go in.

“Against New Zealand, the first half was really disappointing and as a result we found ourselves playing for seventh.

"We have built some good understandings among the younger players and I am very pleased with the way we played against Korea. They play in a certain way and we negated that.” Read more here

Charlotte Gilmartin won 1500m bronze for Great Britain at the short track speed skating World Cup in Shanghai.

It was a first medal on the World Cup circuit for the 25 year-old, on her debut World Cup A final appearance, the fourth medal the Nottingham-based GB team has won this season.

And two-time Olympian Elise Christie won the B final on Saturday morning to finish fifth overall in the 1000m.

Christie is seeking her fourth World Cup medal of the season in the 500m on Sunday at the Oriental Sports Centre, while Gilmartin competes again in the 1500m.

Murray Cochrane also goes on Sunday after qualifying for the 1,500m quarter-final yesterday in a time of 2:13.278, beating the previous British record of 2:14.091 achieved by team-mate Jack Whelbourne in the first round at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

England were knocked out of the Cup competition on day one of the Cape Town Sevens, but will go again in the Bowl on Sunday.

England – who qualified for the Rio Olympics on behalf of Great Britain earlier this year – face Portugal first up on Sunday after they were beaten 10-0 by South Africa in their decisive final pool match, having already beaten Zimbabwe and drawn with Kenya.

Runners up in the season-opening Dubai World Rugby Sevens Series event last week, England began the competition with a thrilling 19-19 draw again Kenya.

James Rodwell snatched a share of the points with a try in the final play of the game, with Dan Bibby nailing the conversion after Warwick Lahmert and Phil Burgess had already gone over.

Against Zimbabwe, England took a 12-0 lead at half time with five tries coming after the break; Alex Davis touched down twice and was joined on the score sheet by Alex Gray, Dan Norton, Rodwell, Josh Watkins and Tom Bowen.

The clash with South Africa became knock-out rugby, with a place in the Cup quarter final at stake, and ill-discipline cost the Red Rose as they could not get on the scoresheet after two yellow cards.  Sportsbeat 2015
