Olympic champions named in GB European Track Championships squad

British Cycling have named the 16 riders set to represent Great Britain at the UEC European Track Championships in Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines later this month, with a number of familiar faces from Rio 2016 included.

Olympic gold medallists Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker and Steven Burke will headline a team of young riders, which also features junior world champions Emily Kay, Danni Khan and Emily Nelson, when the squad compete in Paris from October 19-23.

As well as Kay, Khan and Nelson, double European junior champion Manon Lloyd is also named as a member of the women’s endurance team alongside Archibald and Barker – who were both members of the gold medal-winning women’s team pursuit squad with Laura Kenny and Jo Rowsell Shand in Rio.

In the men’s equivalent, triple Olympic medallist Burke is joined by three-time British champion and Commonwealth silver medallist Kian Emadi, as well as Matt Bostock, Mark Stewart and Ollie Wood.

Meanwhile in the sprint squad, Rachel James, the older sister of double Rio silver medallist Becky, is named alongside Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens, Ellie Richardson and Joe Truman.

“As with every Olympic cycle, the majority of our Olympians are taking well deserved breaks following their successes in Rio and this gives the next generation of track cyclists the perfect opportunity to step up and experience elite level racing,” said British Cycling head coach Iain Dyer.

“I’m really pleased that Katie, Elinor and Steve have put themselves forward for this event and I hope the rest of the team learns from the way they conduct themselves in the racing environment.

“As we turn our attention to Toyko 2020, we’re looking forward to competing at the first major event in the new Olympic cycle.” Sportsbeat 2016
