UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee has revealed the lengths British athletes have gone to in order to qualify for the London Olympics.
Carl Myerscough failed to qualify for the shot final at the European Championships in Helsinki, but then discovered one of his rivals for a place on the British team in the discus - Abdul Buhari - had achieved the 'A' qualifying standard with a throw of 65.24m back in Barnet.
Myerscough, 32, therefore looked for another competition before Sunday night's deadline and jumped on a ferry to Estonia, where he threw 20.13m in the shot - a second Olympic 'B' standard which could secure his place in London.
"It's a great story," Van Commenee said. "Myerscough was sitting in the stands yesterday, heard that Buhari threw the standard in London which means he would probably not be selected for the discus, and decided to look on the web.
"He found a competition in Estonia, jumped on the boat late last night to Tallinn, threw the distance and returned late tonight back here to jump on the plane home tomorrow."
