Murray suffers first round exit from Queen's

World number one and defending champion Andy Murray exited the Aegon Championships at the first round stage after a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 defeat at the hands of Jordan Thompson.

Thompson was a late replacement in the draw for Aljaz Bedene and produced the performance of his career to knock Murray out in the opening round for the first time since 2012.

The Australian, 23, took the first set on a tie break before breaking the two-time Olympic gold medallist twice in the second set to secure victory in one hour and 43 minutes.

Murray admitted it was far from ideal preparation for Wimbledon and conceded the world number 90 from Sydney performed better on the day at Queen's Club.

"It's a big blow, for sure. It has happened in the past where guys haven't done well here and gone on to do well at Wimbledon," said the 30-year-old.

"There is no guarantee that I won't do well at Wimbledon, but it certainly would have helped to have had more matches.

"He played better than me. I didn't create loads of chances. I didn't return particularly well. He served big. He served well."

Elsewhere at Queen's, fellow Brit James Ward was beaten 6-2 6-2 by Frenchman Julien Benneteau while Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady also both suffered defeats.

Wildcard Norrie lost 6-1 6-4 to the 2010 Queen's Club champion Sam Querrey while 23-year-old Broady fell to a 6-4 6-4 defeat to Jeremy Chardy of France.

There was better news however for Britain's Johanna Konta as she continued her impressive grass court season with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) win over Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

The fourth seed, who reached the final in Nottingham earlier this month, progresses to the second round where she'll face American Coco Vandeweghe.
