Murray books Australian Open final spot

Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands continued their impressive run at the Australian Open by booking their place in the mixed doubles final.

It was a rematch of last year’s quarter-final showdown for the duo as they played Australian wildcard pairing Astra Sharma and John-Patrick Smith.

But Murray and Mattek-Sands were able to get the better of the Aussie pair beating them in straight sets, winning 6-3 7-6 (7-4) to seal their place in the final.

For three-time Olympian Murray, it was already his best run at the Australian Open in the mixed doubles, surpassing his quarter-final appearances in 2016 and 2019.

Murray, who is in search of his eighth Grand Slam doubles titles, and Mattek-Sands will face off against fifth seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Nikola Mektic in Saturday’s final.

Murray isn’t the only Brit into a final at the Australian Open as Joe Salisbury made his first men’s doubles final at a Grand Slam.

The 27-year-old and American Rajeev Ram, who are seeded 11th, beat Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kulushkin 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the last four on Thursday to set up a clash with home pairing Luke Saville and Max Purcell on Sunday.
