Murray and Soares through to 02 semi-finals as race for number one hots up

Jamie Murray insists he always knew he and Bruno Soares had something special in their locker after the pair cruised through to the ATP World Tour Finals semi-finals with a third successive victory.

After two straight-set wins already in the competition, the Murray and Soares returned to the O2 Arena in confident fashion, maintaining their winning record, with a 6-3 3-6 10-6 triumph to get past Croatia's Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo of Brazil.

That second set was the first the No.2 seeds had dropped in the competition, but it mattered little, with their first-set success enough to see them top the Edberg/Jarryd group in London.

And while a semi-final clash with either Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez or Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram awaits come Saturday, there are still plenty more personal milestones for Murray and Soares to fight for.

The two are in the hunt to top the doubles rankings come the year’s end, with this victory taking them above incumbents Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, with the French pair playing their last game of the tournament on Friday.

But despite a formidable field which included the Bryan brothers in their group, Murray believes a table-topping performance was always in the offing for the pair, already Australian and US Open winners so far this season.

"All the guys can beat each other here, I didn't really know what to expect," he said.

"But I knew if we could perform well we'd be a tough team to beat.

"We played great the first three matches and we're really excited to be in the semi-finals for the first time."

It was a win which kept alive the hopes of a Murray double atop the world rankings, with brother Andy still in pole position in the men’s singles.

And Jamie is hoping for even more honours to add to what has already been an impressive year, with Soares eyeing up top spot in the individual doubles list – an honour Murray has himself had.

"He's been close the last few weeks and we keep blowing it," said Murray.

"Bruno's obviously been doing a good job for me this year and it would be great for us if he can do it."
