Muirhead leads Scotland to European curling bronze

Scotland Ladies won the bronze medal at the European Curling Championships with a controlled 6-2 victory against Czech Republic in Renfrewshire.

The team, comprising of Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams, Lauren Gray, Kelly Schafer and led by Eve Muirhead were beaten 11-6 by Russia in the last four but bounced back in style.

Skip Muirhead and third player Sloan set a new record of winning medals at seven consecutive Championships.

A fast start saw them take a 2-0 lead after two ends and, after Czech Republic pulled one back in the third, they scored two more points as Muirhead sent her last stone into the house to open up a 4-1 lead.

The home crowd were understandably a little nervous when Czech Republic pulled another point back before two scoreless ends played out.

But Scotland regained their composure, picking up two more points late on to see out victory.

“We’re delighted. To come out and get a medal was our goal at the start of the week – and seven consecutive medals is pretty special,” said Muirhead.

“It’s not the colour we wanted, but we fought hard for that bronze medal.”
