Muirhead and co see off World Champions Switzerland to stay perfect at Euros

Scotland Women snuck past World Champions Switzerland to maintain their 100 per cent record at the European Championships, but skip Eve Muirhead insists they have plenty more to give.

Scotland had trailed from the start, giving up last stone advantage at the first to then see the Swiss opening the scoring with two shots in the second end. Only with a single steal in the seventh, when they managed to defend an early stone buried near the button, did the Scots get back to level the game at 3-3.

Switzerland blanked ends eight and nine looking to keep the last stone advantage that would yield the win in the tenth.

But in that tenth end Switzerland skip Binia Feltscher she was long and through, and Scotland stole the single shot that gave them their fifth win from as many games to keep at the top of the rankings.

However Muirhead, who had early seen her rink beat Finland 10-4, insists there is even more to come in Braehead.

“That’s a break that went our way, but the good thing was, when you’re trailing in the game, first things first, you have to put the pressure on her to make her play a shot to win and that’s what we did,” said Muirhead.

“If you make her play a shot it puts the pressure on her rather than making it a little bit easier on her.

“The good thing was that we fought hard. We actually played away pretty well out there. We had a scrappy first half but then we came back a lot stronger, and a win is a win, you can take it the hard way but you’re going to take the ‘W’ when you have the chance.

“It’s been hard but so far things have been going well. That’s us just through the halfway stage of the round-robin and it’s a long way to go.

“I don’t think we’re doing an awful lot wrong, but we can still get a lot of things better, so it’s just a case of building on the momentum.”

While Scotland’s women have won all their games, their male counterparts opened up day three with a 7-6 extra-end loss to Austria.

But they bounced back in the afternoon to down Switzerland 6-5 to put themselves joint fourth in the standings.

Skip Tom Brewster said: "That was really hard fought. We hung in last night [to beat Sweden] and during this game we said 'just be patient, just like last night'.

"We got a good two in the eighth. We had a chance to force them in nine, but it was tough going round the corners and we struggled with the ice today. For whatever reason we weren't throwing it as cleanly and it got a little bit nervy. But a win’s and win. It's great.

"It's great to be playing in front of a home crowd. It's a lovely arena and the noise goes round – it's fantastic.

"We're just a game-at-a-time team. I don't think we were at our best tonight, but we show plenty of fight and passion – we're Scottish after all. But that'll be a huge confidence booster. We’re going to rest up – I think the guys are tired tonight."
