Ling bags silver and Rio quota spot at Shooting World Champs

Ed Ling might have secured Team GB a quota place for the 2016 Rio Olympics with silver in the men’s trap at the World Championships, but he couldn’t help but think he could have had even more from his Granada adventure.

Ling, who qualified for the men’s trap final one away from equalling the world record of hitting 125 clays, hit 14 out of 15 in the final to go into the gold/silver medal match against Erik Varga.

The 31-year-old pushed Varga all the way after both shot 12 from 12, meaning a shoot-off would decide who would take home the gold.

Unfortunately for Ling, who represented Team GB at London 2012, he missed his shot on the fifth attempt meaning that while he secured a Britain a quota place for Rio, he had to settle for silver.

"I'm highly delighted to win one of the first quotas for GB," said Ling.

"But it's mixed with a tinge of disappointment that I missed the 125 world record which I was really after!"
