Johanna Konta made it out of the first round at Roland Garros for the first time as she beat Antonia Lottner of Germany 6-4, 6-4.
A back-and-forth opening set, with seven breaks of serve went the way of the British No.1.
She followed it up with a more assured display in the second and final set, securing the crucial break in the match-winning game.
Konta was pleased to get the monkey off her back, having failed to win in the tournament proper after four previous failed attempts.
“It was tricky – the first round is always tricky in whichever tournament but especially slams,” she said.
“Especially when my opponent has played three previous matches here, it was always going to be challenging and she is not an easy player to go against.
“There is not much rhythm out on court and it makes it tough. I’m pleased to have hung tough and come through at the end.
“I feel I’m feeling the game reasonably well, but most importantly I’m not panicking. I find myself down in a lot of the matches I am playing so I’m just trusting myself to find a way through the match.”
Konta continues her campaign against American wildcard Lauren Davis. British men's No.1 Kyle Edmund's first round tie against Frenchman Jérémy Chardy was suspended due to poor light after three hours and 55 minutes. With the game poised delicately at two sets and five games apiece, play will resume on Tuesday morning following a thrilling opening round display from both.
Fellow British hopes Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans begin their campaigns in the French capital tomorrow (Tuesday).
