Jackson set to make thrilling return after three years out

Three-time Olympian Ashley Jackson is set for an unexpected return to international hockey.

Great Britain and England’s all-time leading scorer Jackson has made 234 combined international appearances, scoring 133 goals.

The now 31-year-old made his debut back in 2016 before embarking on a 10-year career that would see him represent Team GB in Beijing, London and Rio.  Jackson even helped Great Britain to fourth place at London 2012 – their best performance in a quarter of a century – alongside winning European gold with England in 2009 and bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Now the Kent man is set to make a return to the international fold after retiring back in 2016.

Jackson said: "I am excited to be back and to continue my hockey on the international stage.

“I'd like to thank everyone at HGC [H.O.C. Gazellen-Combinatie] that has made this possible for me. I'd also like to thank Danny [Kerry] for inspiring and motivating me.

“I can't wait to get back with the group and enjoy my hockey at the highest level once again."

Great Britain men’s head coach Danny Kerry added: “We’re looking forward to having Ash’s experience, knowledge and skills within the programme.

“His inclusion further increases the depth within our squad and we look forward to working with him over the coming months ahead.”

Great Britain are currently fourth in the FIH Pro League table and will be hoping to qualify for the Grand Final in the Netherlands at the end of June.

Jackson, whose last appearance came at Rio 2016, could be in contention when Great Britain play the Netherlands on June 14 before they take on New Zealand on June 23.

He will join up with the Great Britain in the coming weeks after returning home from a successful season in the Netherlands playing for HGC. Sportsbeat 2019
