Injury blow for Young's medal bid at World Championships

Alison Young's medal hopes were undone by an untimely illness at the laser radial World Championships in China.

European bronze medallist Young - fourth in the event last year and fifth at the London 2012 Olympics - was well placed in fifth heading into the final days racing.

But she was was unable to take to the waters of Wanpingkou after being struck down by illness during Sunday’s penultimate day.

It meant she dropped to 17th overall while team-mates Chloe Martin, Hannah Snellgrove and Georgina Povall were 24th, 28th and 45th respectively.

Croatia’s Tina Mihelic took gold while Finland's Tuula Tenkanen and American Paige Riley completed the podium.
