Four-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy took the early advantage in his best-of-three sprint semi-final with Germany's Robert Forstemann at the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne.

A daring dive entering the final lap saw Hoy take the initiative from Forstemann and a 1-0 lead.

Jason Kenny, the defending champion after France's Gregory Bauge was stripped of the 2011 crown for an anti-doping offence, held off a charge from world-record holder Kevin Sireau of France to go 1-0 up in his last-eight duel.
