Glasgow confidence boost after London Cup hockey wins

Ashley Jackson and Alex Danson were the stars as England's hockey teams prepared for next week's Commonwealth Games with morale boosting wins at the London Cup.

However, Bobby Crutchley's men's team had to do it the hard way after a 2-2 draw with Ireland in their final.

Ireland twice came from behind to cancel out strikes from Alastair Brogdon and David Condon but England keeper George Pinner performed heroics in the resulting shootout.

Sam Quek scored late on as England's women bounced back from their disappointing World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over South Africa.

Nicola White opened the scoring after just three minutes but Jade Mayne levelled for the visitors.

However, Quek's penalty corner strike with five minutes remaining secured the win.

"We have built a huge amount of confidence in this tournament to take into the Commonwealth Games, which of course is less than two weeks away," said Danson.

South Africa beat Scotland 3-0 to finish third in the men's event while Scotland were 3-2 winners over Wales in the women's third place play-off.
