Florence impresses as British boats star at World Cup

Double world champion David Florence impressed as British boats produced unerring qualifying performances at the canoe slalom World Cup at Lee Valley.

Florence was quickest in the C1 heats and then partnered Richard Hounslow, on their return to the venue where they won Olympic silver at London 2012, to look strong in the C2 heats.

All 15 British boats reached Saturday's semi-finals - with Mallory Franklin the pick of the women's team, finishing fourth fastest in the K1 category.

“I really just to put in a solid run,” said Florence, after the C1.

“It was a really good top half to the run.  But I made a couple of little mistakes in the bottom half, maybe because I was playing it a little safe, but overall I’m really pleased.

“What they set here for the heats was reasonably straight forward but the finals course is tough one.

“It’s never easy on here because the water is so difficult anyway.  But in the final there are definitely a few more moves where there’s potential to set a bit more of a time gap but it will make for an interesting race.”
