Evans and Edmund lead Great Britain v Canada in Davis Cup

After a win in 2015 and semi-final appearance the following year, hopes are once again high of a Davis Cup run by Great Britain’s tennis players.

And the action begins this evening with a World Group first round tie seeing Great Britain take on Canada in Ottawa.

With both teams missing their star men, namely Andy Murray and Milos Raonic, Britain go into the tie as favourites.

Without the big-serving Raonic Canada lack a singles player ranked inside the world’s top 100, while Britain can boast both Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund in the top 50.

Evans, fresh from a final appearance at the Sydney International and his run to the fourth round of the Australian Open, begins events at TD Place Arena with the first rubber against 17-year-old Denis Shapovalov – last year’s junior Wimbledon winner.

Edmund then plays Vasek Pospisil – ranked in the world’s top 40 this time last year – in the second of Friday’s singles matches, ahead of Saturday’s doubles encounter.

That will see former World No. 1 Jamie Murray team up with fellow Olympian Dom Inglot as they take on Daniel Nestor and Pospisil.

The lineups for Sunday’s reverse singles have yet to be revealed, but they are likely to be straight switches from Friday’s games, but the captains can change the lineups until Saturday evening.

Murray junior is missing the tie as he continues to rest following his early-season exertions, but he will not be on the sidelines as he was during the last time he did not play – last season’s second round tie in Serbia.

And Britain captain Leon Smith admits he will be a miss.

"We all miss Andy because he is such a great influence on the team both on and off the court," he said.

"Like we saw last year, he puts a lot of interest and care into this team."
