Laura Muir continued her preparations for next month’s European Indoor Championships in the best possible way by setting a new European 3,000m indoor record in Karlsruhe.
Rio 2016 Olympian Muir was one of a number of Brits to put in impressive performances right around the world on Saturday with Andrew Pozzi and Dina Asher-Smith also shining in Germany while Callum Hawkins and Andrew Butchart did likewise in Japan and America respectively.
Muir, 23, posted a new mark of eight minutes 26.41 seconds to not only take victory but beat Russian Liliya Shobukhova’s record by 1.45 seconds.
It continued a record-breaking run for the 23-year-old who broke Kelly Holmes’ British 1500m record outdoors last July before also taking the 5000m British indoor record in Glasgow last month.
The time also put her fifth on the world indoor all-time list.
Hurdler Pozzi is also a man in form as he clocked a third world lead in seven days to take victory in the 60m hurdles.
The Englishman ran a personal best of 7.49 in the heats before lowering that to 7.44 seconds to win the final – the fastest time in the world this year and third fastest in British history.
“That was so much fun,” said Pozzi, who moves to equal seventh on the European indoor all-time list. “It was my goal for this season to break the 7.50s at least once, but to be honest I hadn't expected it to happen already now, in my second meeting for this season, and then even twice!”
Asher-Smith meanwhile set a world lead of 7.13 in the 60m heats before being edged into second in the final by Jamaican Gayon Evans.
Meanwhile over at the Kagawa Marugame International in Japan, fellow Rio 2016 Olympian Callum Hawkins set a Scottish record in the half marathon.
The 24-year-old stopped the clock on the hour mark exactly to take the win ahead of Ethiopian record holder Atsedu Tsegay and beat the 62:28 set in the 1987 Great North Run by Allister Hutton.
It also puts him second to Sir Mo Farah on the all-time British list over the half-marathon distance.
And finally, Butchart moved third on the British all-time list for the mile distance after setting a world lead 3:53.24 on the way to victory in the Armory Invitational Mile. Butchart tweeted afterwards: "Never thought I would say I'm world lead for the mile...MINDBLOWN!"
